Hello all! I wanted to share some alarming statistics I just found pertaining to hospital stays:
Nearly one fifth (18%) of all patients were injured by medical mistakes during their stay in a hospital.
In almost 3% of cases in the study, conducted by the New England Journal of Medicine, the injury resulted in or contributed to the death of the patient. Another 3% resulted in permanent injury, and 8.5% was life threatening. Nearly 43% of the injuries required some intervention by doctors or nurses and resulted in an extended stay at the hospital.
The report was particularly disturbing since it indicates little progress has been made since the 1999 Institute of Medicine showing that medical mistakes were responsible for more than one million injuries each year.
Wow. That stuff is pretty scary isn't it? Now, what do we suppose we do to prevent things like this from happening? Aside from what the hospitals can do, as patients - we can be progressive in our healthcare and use chiropractic to prevents disease and to avoid any hospital stay.
