Albany Park, along with the rest of Chicago, is home to many urbanites work behind a desk at a computer. We work hard and play even harder. Besides the obvious sports injuries, there is another aspect of our life we must scrutinize in order to minimize the damage it may cause. All jokes aside, our job may be a hazard to our health!

The back, along with the arms, neck, and wrists, can develop problems after many months-or years-of repetitive motion at a desk job. Here we have 10 great points to keep in mind while working and commuting in the Albany Park area, or any area!

1. Standing

I'm sure you have heard it before: Posture is important. Stand up straight! Make sure that you keep your chin up and don't slouch. If you know that you are going to be standing for a long period of time, make sure that you wear comfortable shoes, and ones with proper arch support. At Seaman Chiropractic, we can always fit you for custom orthotics if flat feet are a problem.

2. Working at a Desk

Make sure that you are getting up every 30 minutes to stretch. The type of chair you have is also extremely important. It should fit your back correctly so that your back touches the chair and you have proper low back support. Keep your monitor at eye level. Adjust your desk if possible. You should not be reaching or craning your neck for any reason. Put the 80% of what you use near the edge of the desk (keyboard, phone, and calculator).

3. Sitting

Make sure that sitting position is correct if you will be sitting for long periods of time. Sit with your back against the chair, feet firmly on the floor. Do not cross your legs. Make sure that you're sitting more on your thighs than on your backside.

4. Lifting

Working a 'desk job' doesn't always include sitting at your desk! You may have to lift heavy boxes or office equipment. Lifting objects is one of the most common ways to injure yourself. Even if it is a light object, twisting or pulling in the wrong direction can have a damaging effect on muscles and the spine. You always want to bend at the knees and avoid lifting anything you know is too heavy.
