Hello again, this is Jillian, the chiropractic assistant and front desk coordinator at Seaman Chiropractic Center.

A lot of times people ask how Dr. Seaman, by simply looking at them, is able to point out potential problems with people when we do lectures and events on health topics. To give you an inside scoop, let's examine an aspect that Dr. Seaman checks out: posture. Posture is the window to the spine and poor posture can indicate that there is a problem with a person's spine and nervous system.

When Dr. Seaman analyzes your spine at the office, she is looking at two major areas of concern: one is the function of your spine, how it works, moves etc, which is done by exam and x-ray. The other equally important area of concern (and one she can easily spot, just by looking at you) is the structure or posture of your spine, because this can give a heads up to the underlying problem. This means looking at your ears, shoulders and hips to make sure that they are level, and also looking at how your head is positioned over your shoulders.

When the body is positioned correctly there is minimal strain on the muscles, ligaments, bones, and joints, your internal organs are not compressed, blood vessels are not pressed, nerves are not irritated. This allows your body to function at its best. This balanced position causes the least strain on your spine and its supporting muscles and ligaments. For example if your head is just 2 cm forward of this balanced position it increases the strain on your shoulder and neck muscles 10 times!

Increasing the stress and strain on your spine in this way can contribute significantly to a number of painful or limiting dysfunctions in your spine. These include arthritis and degenerative changes, disc injuries, nerve irritation and muscle and ligament injury.

Chiropractors have known for years that the key to successful treatment of poor posture due to spinal dysfunction is early detection. For that reason, Dr. Seaman encourages the entire family to have their posture checked, especially children. The earlier that spinal distortions are detected, the better are the chances of correcting the problem.
