You are sitting, relaxed in your car waiting for the red light to turn green. All of a sudden you hear screeching tires behind you and a loud sound of metal hitting metal. Before you know it, you have been rear-ended.
Whiplash occurs quicker than the speed at which you can protect yourself against injury. Albany Park chiropractor, Dr. Cynthia Seaman explains when muscles, ligaments, discs and joint capsules become stretched there is injury. This may cause a few days of pain or no pain at all. The damage is done and needs to be addressed with chiropractic care. The most common thing is to stop doing many activities and guard against motion both because of pain and the fear of it hurting worse.
The force is like over stretching a rubber band. The impact stretches all soft tissue (muscles and ligaments, discs and nerves) to the point of injury even if there’s no pain. There are other reasons that soft tissue becomes weak. When an injury occurs, an injured, protruded or irritated disc can also injure spinal nerves.
In the cervical spine or neck, each nerve goes to different parts like the head, immune system, shoulder, arm, and hand. Patients who have a pinched nerve from a whiplash injury describe their symptoms as numbness, tingling, stiffness, pain and/or muscle weakness in a specific area. Depending on where the actual pain travels, chiropractors can tell which spinal disc is affected.
Seaman Chiropractic treatment is aimed at normalizing the spine (nerves, discs, muscles). To accomplish this, we may use a combination of treatments such as spinal adjustments, massage, and strengthening exercises to add stability.
